Aside from the Dwarves that were packing up the belongings they would take to the surface, the rest of the Dwarves were tasked to improving the gears of Artpeâs party.
The Dwarves made sure that all the equipments fit the body of each party member. Then they tried to achieve an overall balance in their equipments. Â They used additional ingredients to create equipments that the party was lacking. Â Before the next official appearance of the heroâs party, the partyâs ability and arsenal was being upgraded.
âThis is the first time dealing with the equipment of a magician or a priestess!  GâŚgo get the records left behind by our ancestors!â
âIâŚit really has been a long timeâŚ.  Hey!  Donât disassemble that!  You might kill the power of the materials!â
While the Dwarves were moving busily, Artpe remained in a quiet room. Â He was continuing his work of refining the branch of the World Tree.
He had thought about doing this when he received the branch from the World Tree. Â It was the ideal material to create a staff. Â It would accept his Mana, and it would boost his Mana. Â It would also allow him to control his Mana if his Mana went out of control.
He hadnât had the opportunity to work on the staff, because he had prioritized making the Magic tome first. Â He had finished making the Magic tome, and as it happened, he would be staying underground for couple more days. Â Therefore, he planned on completing his staff..
âAh. Â I found Artpe!â
âStop clinging to me, Maetel.  It is hotâŚ.  You dork.  I told you not to cling to me.â
âIâm not gonna let go~ Â Eh-eet. Â Eh-eeet.â
Artpe had a lot of things to do. Â Unlike him, Maetelâs specialty was fighting, and everything else to do with Artpe. Â When she realized that they would be staying in the underground until the Dwarves were done making preparations, she hadnât left Artpeâs side. Â Her hobby and forte was Artpe, so it couldnât be helped.
She had always worn armor, but she had shed the armor now. Â She had become lighter, and her appearance delivered a critical wound to his sense of desire. Â Moreover Maetel didnât let go unless Artpe truly hated it. Â Therefore, she continued to cling to him. Â He gave up after giving an adequate attempt at dislodging her. He decided it would be easier to shore up his control over his desire.
âArtpe, what did you do with the leaves that came with the branch?â
âHalf of them were made into tea leaves.  The other halfâŚ.â
Artpeâs finger pointed towards the table.
There was a small glass jar atop the table. Â Magic stones from high level monsters were contained within the jar. Â It also contained the finely ground power of the World Tree leaves. Â Each crystal kept absorbing and emitting Mana. Â Maetelâs eyes twinkled when she saw the brilliant light.
âPretty¡¡¡¡¡¡.â
âYou canât eat it.â
âI wonât eat it!â
It seemed she still had a little bit of her emotions as a pure girl leftover within her. Â Artpe let out a small laughter when he saw this. Â He spoke.
âYou should train like Vadinet or Sienna.â
âI tried. Â My skills doesnât increase when I train by myself.â
âWhat about sparring?â
âThey are too weak to spar.â
â¡¡¡¡¡¡.â
Artpe took a glance at Maetelâs info. Â He realized that her Swordsmanship had already reached level 80.
Mmm. Â It was to be expected. Â If she wasnât overpowered to this degree, she wouldnât be Maetel. Â Recently, Artpe had moved to the fore as he took care of most of their problems using his magic. Â This was why there were less instances where Maetel had taken an active role in a fight. Â For a brief moment, he had forgotten that the biggest cheat within the heroâs party was none other than the original hero Maetel.
âArtpe?â
âNo, it is nothing.â
He stroked Maetelâs head. Â Maetel purred as if she was Roa. Â Artpe resumed his work as Maetel stuck to his back like a shell on a turtleâs back.
He shaved the angular parts, and he trimmed the branch. Â He continued to sync his inner Mana flow with the branch. Â This was how a personal staff of a magician was produced. Â The Dwarves wanted to make Artpeâs staff for him, and Artpe had been aware of their desire. Â Unfortunately, this wasnât something someone else could do for him.
âArtpe will become much stronger after making that?â
âItâll be difficult to bring about drastic change. Â Still, I think my power will increase by 10 percent. Â If I can create the staff exactly to my specification, I think itâll be possible to increase my power by 15 percent.â
Ten percent didnât sound like a lot, but Artpe was already over level 310. Â A 10 percent increase in power would allow him to be on the same level as someone at level 340. Â However, Artpe had excluded any uncertain variables when formulating his assessment, since he hated uncertainty. Â Therefore, it was possible for him to gain much more power than he forecasted.
âWow. Â Will you be able to fight against the Four Heavenly Kings?â
âIt still might not be enough. Â If Vadinet and especially Elrick gained about 30 more levels, it might be possible.â
âUghh¡¡¡¡¡¡.â
At Artpeâs pessimistic words, Maetel became sullen. Â Artpe finally had a thought as to what was bothering Maetel.
âAre you perhaps thinking about what occurred at the Winter Queenâs ruin?â
â¡¡¡¡¡¡yes.â
Maetel didnât hesitate as she acknowledge it. Â She bit her lips hard as she spoke again.
âWe ran away.â
âYes, we ran away. Â We were weaker than our foes. Â It couldnât be helped.â
âThat means¡¡¡¡¡¡ What would have happened if the Winter Queen hadnât guided us towards the underground?â
âWe would have charged out of the ruin, and we would have fought himâŚ.  We would have also fought Etna to the death.â
Since they had cleared the Winter Queenâs ruin in its entirety, he had gained the ability to shatter the shackles placed on Etna by the Demon King. Â However, this couldnât be done while fighting another Four Heavenly King at the same time. Â The task wasnât that easy to accomplish. Â Once another Four Heavenly King made an appearance, Artpeâs plan had been wrecked.
âA fight to the deathâŚ.  That means death was a possibility¡¡¡¡¡¡?â
She knew the answer, yet she asked anyways. Â Even Maetel wasnât that dumb. Â She was just going over the implications of those words once again. Â Artpe declined to answer her question.
âI was scared.â
Maetelâs body shook. Â She was still clinging to Artpe, so her tremors could be felt by Artpe. Â He thought about what to do next for a brief moment. Â Soon, he let go of the branch of the World Tree, and he grabbed her hands.
âEverything is all right now. Â They canât attack us while we are underground. Â Even if we meet one of the Four Heavenly King once again, we are capable of buying enough time. Â Weâll be able to run away. Â This fact doesnât change even if Etna is with this other Four Heavenly King.â
âIf it wasnât for the Winter Queen, death was a possibility.â
âI told you. Â Everything is ok now.â
Even Artpeâs words were having a hard time calming down Maetel. Â It seemed the fact that she was fine until now was miracle in itself.
âIâm afraid.â
âMatel¡¡¡¡¡¡ I might sound a bit cold for saying this, but you are a hero.  Up to a certain point, you should be prepared for the possibility of your ownâŚ.â
âIâm afraid of losing Artpe.â
â¡¡¡¡¡¡.â
It seemed she hadnât been thinking about the threat to her own life. Â That thought hadnât even crossed her mind. Â Artpe was at a loss for words, so he laughed. Â However, Maetel was serious.
âYou cannot die, Artpe.â
âI wonât die. Â I wonât die.â
âYou really really cannot die.â
âYes. Â Donât worry about it.â
âOong¡¡¡¡¡¡.â
Artpe continued to console Maetel, who was having a hard time coping with her worries. Â It seemed she finally calmed down after acting spoiled to her heartâs content. Â She fell asleep while clinging to Artpeâs back. Â Artpe kept letting out a sigh as he continued his work.
âBaby daddy.â
âShut up.â
After playing with Pipi to her heartâs content, Regina had come back to return Pipi, and she had witnessed everything. Â She gave an astute observation. Â Artpe was shaving the World Treeâs branch. Â He was cantankerous as he gave his reply. Â Regina ignored him as she sat at the edge of the bed.
âYou treat Maetel like the favorite wife. Â Vadinet is jealous. Â She is fighting with Sienna for the spot of 2nd wife.â
âEven if you are joking, you shouldnât say such words.â
Vadinet didnât have any direct combat abilities. Â If she fought with Sienna, Vadinet would be crushed by Siennaâs hammer. Â Regina had a slightly pleased expression on her face when she saw Artpe shudder.
âIt is all karma.â
âYes, letâs just say it is all my fault.â
âIt is the manâs role to accept everything.â
âGonna get stabbed.â
It wouldnât be Artpe. Â Some other woman might try to stab Maetel. Â Regina was about to say something more to Artpe, but he just waved her away. Â It meant he wanted to focus on his task, and he didnât want her to interfere with his work.
âIâll just watch.â
âYou should train your magic.â
âI always train. Â My best training method is to be next to Artpe. Â I resist against Seduction magic.â
âI donât use such a spell. Â All right?â
Artpe grinded his teeth as he smoothed the branch. Â His hand was surrounded by Mana Strings, so the branch was getting smoother everytime his hand passed over it. The branch continued to let out a brilliant light, and the light filled the room. Â It was a magical and magnificent sight.
Regina had been watching the process when she suddenly had a thought. Â She asked him a question.
âWhere did you learn how to make a staff?â
âI learned it from a book, you dork.â
âYou are younger than me, yet you have more knowledge than me. Â Are you really younger than me?â
âMaybe you are just ignorant relative to me?â
âDenied.â
She continued to have a blank expression on her face, yet her cheeks puffed out. Â It was a cute sight, so he snickered. Â Reginaâs eyebrows twitched.
âArtpe is weird.â
âYes, yes. Â Iâm weird. Â Letâs just leave it at that.
Artpe extended a hand towards her.  Regina tilted her head in puzzlement when she saw his gesture.  Then she carefully placed her small hand atop his palm.  Her hand was cold yet cool.  It felt as if her hand would shatter if he gripped her hand with a little bit of force.  It naturally made Artpe feel nervousâŚ.  No, this wasnât it.
âI donât want your hand. Â I want Pipi.â
â¡¡¡¡¡¡hate you.â
After receiving Pipi from Regina, he placed Pipi near the polished branch of the World Tree. Â Pipi understood its role, so it tried to sync with the branch of the World Tree, which was emitting Mana. Â Artpe nodded his head as he looked at the two items.
The core process in which he would make a true âDemite Staffâ would start now.
âPipi has the ability to control Mana, and it can maintain an active spell. Â At the same time, it can boost my Mana.â
Artpe was carefully watching the resonance between the Demite and the branch of the World Tree using his Read All Creation ability. Â When he spoke, Regina tilted her head as she gave a reply.
âI cannot do that. Â It is impossible for me to boost Artpeâs Mana.â
âYou are a bit different from Pipi. Â Both of you are Demites, but you were created to be an extremely independent being by the humans. Â In the process, your sense of self had solidified, and it became defined in your Record. That is why it is difficult for you to mix with another person.â
âUnfortunate¡¡¡¡¡¡.â
Artpe let out a bitter laughter as he continued to speak.
âHowever, there is something even a Demite cannot do. Â It can boost my Mana, but I cannot easily take control of a Demiteâs pure Mana. Â If Iâm not careful, our Mana might clash.â
â¡¡¡¡¡¡agreed.  Amplification of Mana, and a Demiteâs own magic are two different function.  It doesnât overlap.â
âThat is the only downside to using a Demite. Â That is why Iâm trying to use this branch of the World Tree.â
It would act as a bridge. Â It would allow Artpe to mix his Mana with Pipiâs Mana, and at the same time, Pipi would be able to boost his Mana. Â There was no Mana cost to this process. Â In fact, it would amplify the Mana instead of there being a loss of Mana. Â This was the power of the World Treeâs branch. Â It possessed a tremendous ability befitting the name of the World Tree.
âI already made a channel where my Mana will flow. Â When Pipi finishes its synchronization, the channel where Pipiâs Mana will flow will be formed. Â The next step is simple. Â I have to direct both channels towards Pipi. Â At the end, I just need to create a structure thatâll loop in the branch of the World Tree. Â Itâll allow Pipi to finish the amplification. Â What do you think? Â It is really easy, right?â
âIt doesnât sound easy at all.â
âThe branch of the World Tree is awesome, so itâll combine Pipiâs Mana with mine.â

âEasy.â
While the two conversed, Pipi was synchronizing with the World Treeâs branch in real time. Â Artpe kept watching the process, and he brought out couple strands of Mana String. Â His eyes were filled with resolve.
âAll right. Â Letâs start.â
âAnticipation.â
No man in this world knew where this underground location was. Â In such a location, an Artifact that would be placed at the zenith of history was being born.
