The campus, long waiting expectantly for nightfall, was filled with the sounds of laughter and speaker music that invoked mild feelings of nostalgia.
Finally back at Toyogasaki Academy after those 48 hours of revising the scenario, I found the three day school festival finally at its climax â the late-night festival.
Looking up at the surrounding buildings, I saw they were all dark and empty â but right in the middle of the grounds, a red bonfire burned with all the students outside clustered thickly around it.
Despite the towering safety and environmental challenges posed by such an event, the school festivalâs implementation committee worked their unknown magic to keep this good old tradition alive.
âŠBut of course that âgoodâ part only applies to the more popular demographic of the school.
As proof, only couples dancing to their heartsâ content could be found gathering around the fire, as their less stylish counterparts surely wished they would catch fire and burn as they looked on.
Oh, and nobodyâs sure how it started, but for as long as I can remember, itâs been the girl who asks her desired partner to the folk dance at Toyogasaki.
It rivals reverse-patterned school excursionsâ ability in the creation of couples, and would certainly make an old matchmaking woman smile.
ââŠYo.â
ââŠYo.â
In a corner of the campus, a short distance away from the fire:
Partnerless boys and girls were having fun in their own groups, and there was even a lone harmonica player, trilling his instrument as he stared forlornly at the fire. Meanwhile, I stood in front a girl sitting on a bench with her sketchbook spread out in front of her.
âIâm surprised you can draw in this darkness with those myopic eyes.â
âIâm fine so long as I can see the scenery. I donât need to see my hands to know how the art will turn out.â
ââŠWow, I donât think Iâll ever get to feel that way.â
In Eririâs sketchbook, a bonfire burned as if it was alive.
Those ignorant of her true identity might mistake her drawing for a landscape piece produced for the Art Club, when in reality itâs a sketch for a doujin galge background.
âDid you enjoy the festival?â
âIâm surprised the director who spent the last two days stuck in his house adding to the scenario and dramatically increasing my workload can still ask me that question.â
âIâm sorry! Iâm sorry! Iâm sorry!â
Looks like while we were in the middle of our bloodbath, a similarly intense battle had taken place concurrently.
âMy God, youâve been throwing these kinds of questions at me since just now! âWhy didnât you enter the Miss Toyogasaki pageant this yearâ, hmm?â
âWell, Iâm not going to apologize for that. I bet even youâre glad now youâve got a great excuse for missing it.â
âEven if I feel that way, that isnât something I can just go around telling people, right?â
âNobody ever said you had to keep your hobbies a secret.â
ââŠWell, in the first place, youâre already breaking a huge rule by talking to me in front of so many people.â
âIn tonightâs circumstances, our meeting will be but a legend.â
With the practice of girls asking boys out in effect for the day, Eririâs usual followers were nowhere to be found.
Though I could feel the inquisitive glances from males sporadically coming from afar, there was really no reason to be worried about the pathetically moe pairing of 2D otaku (real) and golden-haired twintailed lady (fake).
ââŠSpeaking of which, whereâs Kasumigaoka Utaha? Havenât you two been together for the past two days?â
âJust saying, but nothing happened between us, okay?â
âOh, I know. Itâs not as if that supremely lazy sweet-talking bitch could do anything even if she wanted to.â
âWow, you never change, do you? And you know weâre not like that. Weâre bonded by the same passion, mind, and resplendent love between master and disciple.1 You wouldnât understand.â
ââŠI donât think she wants to understand that either.â
âAnyway, Utaha-senpaiâs over there.â
I gestured away from us in the direction of the courtyard as I spoke.
âSheâs got stuff to talk about with Katou, apparently.â
*Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *
âOh, so you two decided on fixing it that way⊠Anyway, thanks for the hard work, Kasumigaoka-senpai.â
âI still donât understand half of what youâre saying. Iâm just going to ignore anything weird you say.â
âErm, then, you knowâŠâ
âWhat?â
âDid senpaiâs, erm, âreal problemâ work itself out?â
âOf course not. Iâve had my hands full working on the scenario.â
ââŠErm, Iâm not sure what to say about thatâŠâ
âThen I would appreciate it if you say nothing at all. Itâll only upset me if you do.â
âAh, ahaha⊠ButâŠI think thatâs mostly karma coming around to get you, senpai.â
âWhatâsâŠthat supposed to mean?â
âKasumigaoka-senpai, you treasure Aki-kun too much.â
ââŠâ
âYou treasure him to the extent where you place him above everybody else⊠If youâre wondering, running from Tamasaki to Waai City out of the blue was a good example.â2
âI see⊠Perhaps Iâm just another âRuriâ after all.â
âErm, which means?â
âNo matter how much I treasure him⊠Whether itâs as a younger sister, a source of inspiration, his master â Iâm always treated as someone special by him, but never as his equal.â
âSo the route Kasumigaoka-senpai wanted to choose wasâŠâ
âSay Katou-san, do you know the story about the jewel box of memories and the toolbox waiting on hand?â3
âSorry, I donât. Besides, that isnât a very common reference, is it?â
ââŠI wonder about that.â
âBy the way, I have one last weird thing to say, will you listen?â
âYes?â
âRuriâs⊠just another Sayuka in the end, isnât she?â
âKatou-sanâŠâ
âI apologize if Iâm wrong, but Iâve read ăMetronome in Loveă twice.â
ââŠI see.â
âWhile theyâre completely unlike each other visually, thereâs something about the way they think and act⊠that makes it seem as if Sayukaâs the real incarnation of Ruri.â
âYou might have been the first to realize that.â
âThatâs⊠well, only because other people donât know about Ruri yet.â
âBut my greatest fan hasnât caught on to it.â
âAh, ahahaâŠâ
âSayuka is the first character I ever brought to life.â
âYouâre talking about your debut.â
âBack then I was clumsy, I didnât have any experience building characters⊠and I wasnât very good at socializing, either.â
ââBack thenâ, huh?â
âI didnât know anything about other girls. So I could only start from the person closest to me â myself.â
âKasumigaoka-senpaiâŠâ
âThatâs why⊠thatâs why this time I wanted Ruri to win.â
âI wanted Sayuka to win then too.â4
*Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *
âSo, is the scenario finally finished this time around?â
âYes, butâŠâ
Indifferent to the clamor ahead, Eririâs pencil was still flying across the paper at incredible speeds.
âBut what?â
âI canât vouch for the content. I had a hand in writing it, after all.â
Dancing mobs⊠erm, students, as well as the protagonist and heroine had been added to the schoolyard and bonfire in the book, turning the sketch into an event CG in the blink of an eye.
âOh, Iâll bet itâs a magnum opus of horrid writing. Iâll also bet itâs about heroines with all sorts of moe appeal conveniently falling in love with the kind of ridiculously perfect and strong main character that makes otaku everywhere happy. Then they fight the big bad boss, win and everybody gets their lovey-dovey happy ending, right?â
ââŠYou havenât read my scenario yet, by any chance?â
âI havenât, but Iâve seen enough of the inside of that head of yours.â
Itâs true that I like those kinds of developments, but I could almost feel Eririâs words as they hit me one by one.
Iâve been seeing what goes on in your head for a long time too.
âEither way, I canât deny that I might have ruined the sophistication of Utaha-senpaiâs work just a little.â
Equally vindictive, with hobbies and taste disconcertingly similar.
Both distinguished prodigies, their style and philosophy frighteningly different.
In this world, theyâre two of a kind.
âBut stillâŠâ
âHm?â
âThe new scenarioâs a lot more workable than the old one.â
âAh.â
âWeâve got a much better chance of beating ărouge en rougeă and Hashima Izumi now.â
Part of me really wanted to question the point of competing in the first place, though.
Question the idea that their rivalry should really matter at all, and question whether they should focus instead on producing art that would satisfy themselves.
These arguments swirled in my head as a result of my newly acquired wisdom.
ââŠYeah.â
But if thatâs the ultimate source of Eririâs, and on the flip side, Izumi-chanâs motivation, thenâŠ
âThen it shouldnât be a problem. No matter how much youâve debased Kasumigaoka Utaha.â
âNo, thatâsâŠâ
Wouldnât that make us irreconcilable enemies too, Iori?
âThatâs not something I can pretend I didnât hear, Sawamura-san.â
âThatâs not something I plan to take back either.â
âWhen did youâŠâ
Iâm no longer sure if the strong communication between members of ăblessing softwareă is a good thing or a bad thing.
We turned our backs to find Utaha-senpai suddenly there, assailing Eriri with her usual beautifully icy voice, agitation from sleep deprivation miraculously sealed off without a trace.
âAnyway, itâs not like my writing grows soft nor my reputation sullied when something a little foreign is mixed in.â
âOh, you donât have to force yourself that hard, you know? You can always blame it on your co-writers if it doesnât sell. We all knowthatâs the true secret to success in scenario writing.â
âOh, but we canât shift all the blame onto Ethics-kun. Especially since Iâve now used up all my energy and willpower opening new possibilities for him.â
âYou mean you helped me make my writerâs debut! Donât use ambiguous expressions like that!â
*Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *
âSighâŠâ
With those two entrenched in a no-holds-barred verbal conflict in no time at all, I made my escape as soon as I could.
But like a moth drawn to a flame, I literally found myself fleeing towards the fire.
The domain of the socially mobile â the revolving wheel of the folk dance.
âOnii-sama.â
The discomfort I felt here was comparable to the warzone earlier, as I slowly threaded my way through the transient gaps, taking extra care not to bump into anybody.
âOnii-samaâŠâ
At any rate, I have to get out of here as soon as possible.
Iâm bothering the other students, but more importantly Iâm in a greater predicament myself.
âOoh⊠I said Onii-sama!â
âEh?â
And then.
I reacted reflexively to that voice originating from outside my consciousness.
No matter how much I think about it, âOnii-samaâ isnât something Iâm used to being called.
No matter how many boxes that one word checks off in the checklist of arousal, I still wouldnât make the mistake of thinking that voice is calling me. Usually.
However.
âYouâre horrible, Onii-samaâŠâ
An unknown girl stood there alone, looking unmistakably straight at me.
A mysterious girl with lustrous long black hair, flowing naturally in all its fleeting beauty.
ââŠRuri?â
No, it wasnât.
That name and that figure resonated faintly in the depths of my memory.
It must have been in the visuals, the materials, somewhere in the 2D dataâŠ
âIâve always been calling out to you⊠for years, decades, forever and everâŠâ
Hinoe Ruri.
Back in the present world, borrowing Meguriâs body to regain her lost love and life, sheâs a slightly⊠well, fairly, yandere little sister with a brother complex.
âBut, but now IâmâŠÂ Seiji.â
And starring in that role was Kanou Meguri⊠also known as Katou Megumi.
ââŠIâm so happy, Onii-sama.â
ââŠâ
A short distance removed from the bright light of the campfire.
âAt last, I can touch Onii-sama again. I can feel the weight of Onii-samaâs hand pressing against mine again.â
âErmâŠâ
Dancing awkwardly and trying to avoid others at the same time, the two of us drew mild curiosity from the sidelines.
âBeing able to do that alone⊠no, being able to do something so extravagant makes Ruri so, so, so happyâŠâ
âLook, Katou, IâŠâ
âThis wonât do, Aki-kun. We have to act it out properly till the end, or else the scriptwriter will get angry, you know?â
âSo it was her doing after allâŠâ
The spectators included a golden haired girl sitting on a bench in the distance, directing the full force of her hatred and displeasure over here as she ran her pencil ragged over her sketchbook.
And next to her, extremely pleased yet regretful, cheering yet cursing under her breath â a black haired girl with an incongruent expression.
âTo be Ruri, to be this way at least for today⊠thatâs what senpai entrusted me to do.â
Iâm no stranger to the feeling of wanting something with all your heart.
âI want you to let her rest in peace. To answer her feelings.â
Right now, every aspect of Katou is Ruri.
That yandere, pampered, yet incredibly cute and loving little sister.
At this point, Iâm not longer sure if Eririâs artistic skill is that amazing, of if itâs really Katou whoâs an extraordinary bishoujo in her own right.
âSo Aki-kun, wonât you be Seiji, who regains his twin memories and falls in love with Ruri, for today at least?â
âWonât there be rumors spreading around tomorrow if we do that?â
Another hairstyle change.
And the âlegendaryâ couple at the folk dance.
âItâll be alright, since itâs the both of us.â
ââŠYouâve become pretty accustomed to self-abasement, Katou.â
The conversation was of the same crude variety, even as we neared the climax of such an important flag.
Our hands were still locked.
Somehow, I found ourselves naturally pulling closer together.5
*Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *
âTAKI UTAKO?!â
âDonât you think itâs a great name?â
âHold on a minute Kasumigaoka Utaha⊠Youâre serious?â
âWhy not? Itâs just a joint penname weâre using for this game.â
ââŠI find it hard to believe that youâre taking this so lightly. You can at least try to act stubborn.â
âIâm not taking that from the person whoâs been pulling people along with her since first grade.â
âI donât know about you, but I donât console myself with such pathetic delusions.â
âThatâs why Iâm saying itâs just a penname. Itâs not like I had any mentally unsound thoughts about binding us as creators and authors together, never to part, while I created it.â
âOh, you did. You thought about it long and hard, didnât you?!â
âWell, that aside, âourâ job is now finished.â
âThere was no need for the emphasis on that plural. Tomoya still has plenty of work to do.â
âAll thatâs left is your art⊠the last and toughest battle.â
ââŠI know.â
âWe drew out the scenario about as late as we could. I apologize wholeheartedly for all the trouble weâve caused on that front.â
âWell, itâs not like I was delayed by you, soâŠâ
âBut if weâve worsened our story⊠that isnât something so easily forgiven.â
ââŠIâve already prepared myself for that. I donât need you to tell me.â
âWell then, I suppose Iâll be going.â
âYouâre going home?â
âWhat are you talking about? Isnât the school festival just getting started?â
âBut thereâs only the late-night fe- Wait, what?â
âThatâs right, Iâm going to dance with Ethics-kun now. Itâs almost time for me to switch with Katou-san.â
âWha-?!â
âThat was my objective all along. Why else would I drag my tired body all the way back to school?â
âN-Now just wait a minute! Kasumigaoka Utaha!â
âAre you going to dance after me, then? I donât think Ethics-kun would refuse, you know?â
ââŠâ
âBut I guess thereâs no chance of that happening since youâve built that wall of lies for yourself.â
ââŠâ
âBut you know, Sawamura-san, before youâre tied down⊠you should do really something about it.â
ââŠâ
âWell thenâŠÂ Good luck, Sawamura Eriri.â
*Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *
âI wonât loseâŠâ
âI wonât lose to anybodyâŠâ
ââŠ*sob*â
