“Woof!”Recalling how this couple had just saved someone’s life,the dog decided to grace her with a response.This woman usually came off as extremely stingy.He never expected her to be kind-hearted.The dog had now perceived the woman with fresh eyes.

“It’s pretty obedient.Should I get something for you to eat?Do you want some bones?”The wife brought the large dog next door and set down the leftover bones she had from dinner.

The dog expected the woman to get a call from her husband,and to get firsthand news about the old man’s condition,it would have to obediently follow the woman around.

About 20 minutes later,the husband finally called.

“Wifey,the hospital wanted 10,000 yuan for the hospital stay.”Hearing the man’s voice,the large dog immediately perked its ears.

“That much?”The woman was shocked.

“Yeah,and this is just the beginning.Who knows if there are additional fees needed later.”

“Pay it.I’ll transfer the money to you soon,”after some consideration,the woman gritted her teeth and replied.

“Wifey,why are you suddenly so generous?”He was quite aware of how stingy his wife could be,so he was shocked when confronted by her sudden generosity.

“Shows how much you know.This old man is living all alone,anyone can tell that he doesn’t have many years left.If we saved him this time,and let him owe us for our compassion,we can find a way to get our hands on his house.”The woman slapped her abacus in glee,fully oblivious to the large dog behind her that was already making deep growling sounds in its throat.

“Woof!”The dog howled as it bolted forward.

The woman heard barking and turned to look behind her.Noting that there was nothing unusual with the dog,she resumed her call,”How long will it take for us to afford a house given our current jobs?This is our chance.I’m telling you right now,I would not agree to have kids until we have a house.This fragile old man worked every day and might keel over the next time he gets sick.At that point,we can transfer the house under us and sell it back to the city for a hefty down payment.It won’t matter if he doesn’t die.We will just make him pay us back for the hospital fees and if he can’t pay up,we can ask him to use his house as collateral…”

The large dog was quite tempted to attack the scheming woman who had her eyes on the old man’s residence,but it knew that if he were to bite her to death,he would also be beaten to death.Ever since it began degenerating,it had long abandoned the idea of living.But it made a promise to the old man to stay by his side.That was why it must not die before the old man.

The large dog thought for a moment and then turned tail to run out of the house.

“What’s that sound on your end?”The man heard a commotion across the line.

“No worries.It’s just the dog going back next door…”

The large dog ran out of the small community while braving through the storm and ran to the convenience store that Mi Wan often patronized.Relying on its only non-degenerative sense of smell,the large dog was able to find a trace of that scent despite being encumbered by the downpour.

“Woof!”The large dog once again bolted into the rainstorm.

15 minutes later,it stopped in front of an imposing wall in the courtyard.Following along the wall,it found an inconspicuous dog hole and slipped inside.

“Woof woof woof!”

It was late in the night and there was a large dog incessantly barking in the house,instantly waking everyone in the old residence.A group gathered in their sleepwear and slippers,haphazardly running out to investigate the situation.

“Where did this large dog come from?”

“How did it get in?”

“It looks wounded!”

“Did it run upstairs?”

“Oh no,that’s the Young Miss’s room…”

“Hurry up,don’t let the Young Miss open the door.”

A bunch of people chased after the large dog,scrambling up the stairs,but they were not able to warn Mi Wan in time.When the dog reached the entrance to the bedroom,Mi Wan just happened to open the door.

“Miss,be careful!”

Mi Wan watched as the group hovered cautiously around the dog,and smiled cordially before slowly lowering her head,and stared at the scruffy wet dog.

“Sit.”

The dog took a step back and sat down without hesitation.It was amazingly obedient.

“Miss…you…know this dog?”Butler Ye asked shakily.

“I do.It doesn’t bite.”Mi Wan said reassuringly.

“Oh,it doesn’t bite.That’s good.”Butler Ye hesitantly took a few steps forward.Once he realized that the dog was indeed docile,he finally relaxed,”This dog…”

“It must be hungry.Butler Ye,please help prepare something for it to eat,I’ll bring it down in a little bit,”Mi Wan said.

“Okay,”Butler Ye answered.There was a falter in his movements,but in the end,he went ahead and made preparations without asking anything.

When everyone verified that nothing was wrong,they slowly dispersed.Not long after,the only ones that remained in that hallway,was a person and a dog.

“Barging in here in the middle of the night.Do you have a death wish?”Being cooped up indoors because of the rain had soured Mi Wan’s mood.

“Woof woof!”
