Kukuku, Roderick scowled at me upon seeing that I was stifling my laughter.\n
\n
After our discussion with Pryde-sama ended, and soon after sending his son, Arthur, back home, Roderick and I headed to the pub. \n
\n
It was quite unusual for him to invite me to go drinking.\n
\n
Roderick and I had been friends from way back when we were still new recruits, and this was our go-to place for drinking since then. \n
\n
We drank here when Roderick got married and when I did as well. When my little sister, who was much younger than me,* left the country, and when Roderick’s son, Arthur, was born. \n
\n
*Clark and his younger sister have a huge age-gap. The specific years aren't mentioned, and I’m not sure if I worded it properly. Feel free to change this Parascythe >u<\n
\n
By now, I had already lost count of how many times we had drunk together like this. \n
\n
“I never thought I’d ever see the day where I can hear you say such words.”\n
\n
“But the person who went ahead and said such embarrassing words is you.”\n
\n
Right now, we were the only people in this pub. The owner was already an acquaintance of ours. So he left the key hanging at the same spot as usual for us.\n
\n
“It’s just that from the very bottom of my heart, I’m honestly glad that you're still alive.”\n
\n
After saying that, I raised my glass, and he lightly clinked his beer mug against mine. A light clunk echoed upon the two glasses hitting each other.\n
\n
“If you die, I, along with the other knights, will surely be sad.”\n
\n
“My friend, are you already drunk?”\n
\n
Just when I thought of retorting back at him that he was also quite drunk himself, Roderick had already gulped down the contents of his glass as his brows remained furrowed. Then, he refilled his glass once more.\n

\n
“Arthur...was crying.”\n
\n
After saying that, Roderick, who seemed to have remembered, froze, and then he nodded his head.\n
\n
“Ah, I also saw it. When Pryde-sama…”\n
\n
“Not that time, stupid.”\n
\n
I said as I mercilessly cut off my friend’s words, and then I threw at him a piece of deep-fried meat that was left on the counter.\n
\n
(Para: Nothing says I love you more than yeeting fried meat at someone)\n
\n
“When you were about to be killed by the ambushers….he was crying.”\n
\n
He grabbed the deep-fried meat with one hand as his eyes widened in surprise. He finally placed down the beer glass that had been holding since we arrived here.\n
\n
“'Don’t touch my dad, stop'....and he kept on shouting for us to save you.”\n
\n
The alcohol seemed to have finally hit him, or it might be because he was embarrassed, but with his face flushed, he downed his beer in one chug.\n
\n
“Even if you try to forget it, it’s useless since I remember it.”\n
\n
I said while intentionally smirking at him. Roderick, who saw it, slammed his glass down on top of the counter and remained still for a while.\n
\n
Twenty minutes had already passed when he finally opened his mouth.\n
\n
“...These past two days feel like a dream, almost as if I'm living in an illusion.”\n
\n
He uttered in a small voice.\n
\n
“...You're right,” I said in agreement.\n
\n
In reality, Roderick should have died yesterday. \n
\n
His foot was caught under a boulder, and he was surrounded by the enemies.\n

\n
Even though he was famous for being the Unscathed Knight, I also thought at the time that everything was over. I, the other knights, and even Roderick himself had given up already. \n
\n
But then Pryde-sama appeared.\n
\n
It wouldn’t have been unusual for a prince to do so, but I have never heard of a princess who was able to wield a sword and a gun.\n
\n
Though it was true that the ambushers were mostly small-fries. If it had been a fair battle, never mind the newly recruited knights, but if it was the well-trained veteran knights who faced them, then there would be no doubt that they would lose. \n
\n
Nevertheless, they were made up of adults, and yet all by herself, Pryde-sama was able to put them out of commission. \n
\n
I, as well as the other knights, were astonished by the jaw-dropping events that were unfolding on the screen. At first, I flusteredly ordered for the reinforcements to make haste, but Stayle-sama stopped me, and then he said, “I will take full responsibility for the actions of my Elder Sister.” \n
\n
He said it with such earnestness, but at the same time, both of his hands were holding bombs and ammunition. It was scary just imagining what he would do if something terrible happened to Pryde-sama. However, the way she fought was clearly beyond what a young lass could do.\n
\n
Just seeing her sharpshooting skills, as she precisely aimed and shot through the enemies’ hands or feet. That kind of accuracy was rare, and only a handful within the Knight’s Order had that skill...Nah, if you don’t include those with special abilities, then I know there’s only going to be fewer of them.\n
\n
Then there was her swordsmanship. Rather than defending, she parried, staving off the incoming attack. At the very least, I doubt there was anyone who could match her skills amongst the new recruits. Combined with the way she controlled her movements, I couldn’t help but remember a book from a foreign country that I read a long time ago. A word from that book suddenly appeared in my head, “Yasha/Yaksha**.” It was truly astounding to the point that the other knights were fervently cheering her on.\n
\n
(Eunie: **夜叉 I’m not a hundred percent sure on how to read this. But from what I know it’s read as Yasha and it means demonic warriors. Like the ones where Buddhist guardian deities are portrayed as demonic warriors. I tried consulting my friend and she said it might be similar to Goddess Kali or something but I think Goddess Kali is Hinduism? Sorry, I’m not familiar with religion and stuff so I’m not sure...I really hope the next chapter of the manga appears. I’ll just use what CV will use by then.^^;)\n

The first princess: Pryde Royale Ivy.\n
\n
Until three years ago, horrible rumours about her were spreading. I heard the one about how she was a selfish princess. Roderick and I even had the chance to meet her a few times before, and every time we saw how she conducted herself, both of us could only let out a sigh in disappointment since it just further proved that the rumours were real. To think that this kind of person would be the next queen. I even prayed to the gods to prevent it from happening, but then when Tiara-sama’s existence was announced on the day of her birthday celebration, she seemed to have changed.\n
\n
Now she is a profoundly compassionate person, and her little brother, Stayle-sama, adores her tremendously. She became a person who thought of her people, truly an admirable princess.\n
\n
Some say that she has changed her ways or that she feels intimidated by the sudden appearance of Tiara-sama...but no one really knows the truth. However, the figure and conduct shown by Pryde-sama during yesterday’s events couldn't be described through simple words.\n
\n
She risked her life for Roderick’s sake and saved him from the collapsing cliff.\n
\n
When the cliff collapsed, I really thought that everything was over this time. Even Stayle-sama’s complexion became pale as he ordered, “Hurry, hurry up and rescue\n
Elder Sister.” And even amidst the chaos, with great vigour, he seemed like he was ready at any time to rush to her side.\n
\n
Even I resolved myself to the fact that I just lost my best friend and the heavy punishment that awaited me for involving the First Princess.\n
\n
But then the video showed that they were alive, and the moment I saw Roderick appear on the video, I, along with the other knights, couldn't stop our tears.\n
\n
They were alive. Just how miraculous and joyous it was for us when we heard the news that they were alive.\n
\n
Even though she was able to foresee and stop it from happening...just how many people were willing to risk everything? No matter how much I thank Pryde-sama, it will never be enough.\n
\n

\n
Of course, as a knight, I shouldn’t be approving of her actions, and that was why both Roderick and I did not express our gratitude.\n
\n
It was right after Pryde-sama returned. I could still vividly remember how much I cried and laughed the moment I personally saw with my very own eyes Roderick being escorted back by the first battalion. I, and the other knights who were there, immediately went to surround and hug him as we made sure countless times that this wasn’t a dream. \n
\n
When I told him I was glad that he was still alive, he looked at us dazedly, and I heard him mutter in a small voice, “So this really isn’t a dream…”\n
\n
That day, I lost count of how many times I cursed God.\n
\n
That day, I lost count of how many times I clung to God.\n
\n
That day, I lost count of how many times I had thanked Him.\n
\n
That day, I had already lost count of how many times I had thanked Pryde-sama.\n
\n
It wasn’t just me, but seeing the way Pryde-sama fought that day and her demeanour during today’s audience, along with the words she uttered to Roderick.\n
\n
Everyone from the Knight’s Order respected and admired her, deeply moved by her actions.\n
\n
Even before the audience today happened, conversations about Pryde-sama had already become a hot topic amongst the knights. Well, all except for one person, Roderick himself —the person who was saved by her. Because even during the audience, his official stance remained the same, which was that he could not forgive Pryde-sama’s actions.\n
\n
Even though deep inside, I knew he was thankful for Pryde-sama saving him, and it was because of her precognition ability that the new recruits were not harmed. But his honour as a knight would not allow it, and more than anything else, he had already prepared himself. As a knight, he should have died there. He felt so strongly about it that it made it harder for him to be honest with himself.\n
\n
That was...until the audience.\n
\n

\n
When I suddenly raised my head to look at the table, it seemed like I was too deep in my own thoughts that I had lost count of how many bottles of sake Roderick had already downed. \n
\n
“You...don’t you have plans on training Arthur at dawn tomorrow?”\n
\n
Astounded by the sight of him and the number of bottles, I tried to warn him that too much drinking would be harmful to his injuries. But of course, he didn’t heed my words and continued emptying his glass.\n
\n
“.......It’s been a while since I've felt like the taste of sake/alcohol was this good.”\n
\n
He muttered in a small voice as he smiled. It was a smile that he rarely showed in front of the knights. \n
\n
\n
“You...to be able to meet...you all like this once again...I’m really glad.”\n
\n
“Is the alcohol finally getting to you, Roderick?”\n
\n
“I’m glad...that I’m able to drink with you like this again.”\n
\n
“Same here, my friend.”\n
\n
Roderick’s eyelids seemed to be getting heavy as they fluttered, but from the looks of it, I doubt he would stop drinking anytime soon.\n
After saying that, he grabbed ahold of his glass and gulped it down. **Though his eyes seemed to be wet already. \n
\n
(Eunie: Aww. **his teary~)\n
(Para: Roderick is definitely a sad drunk lol)\n
\n
This kind of appearance...was something I could never let the other knights see.\n
\n
I’m sure he feels overjoyed since Arthur declared that he will aim to become a knight.\n
\n
It seemed like their fighting had become worse during these past few days, and he wasn’t able to endure it, so Roderick had been coming here frequently to wash away the bitterness. \n
\n
“Are you happy, my friend? When the son that you’ve always been proud of said that he’ll aim to become a knight?”\n
\n
*Upon seeing the grinning and teasing-like expression on Vice-Captain Clark's face, Roderick could not help but show a bit of an irritated expression as he answered, “...Of course I am.”\n
\n
*switched to 3rdpov.\n
\n
It might have been due to the influence of the alcohol/sake, but the latter could not contain himself as he poured his heart out.\n
\n
For Roderick, the Vice-Captain, Clark Darwin, was definitely his one and only confidant***.\n
\n
That was why he could easily show Clark his weak side, and because he could not express through words how happy he was right now, he went and invited him to go drinking. Even back then, it was Clark who he first introduced to his wife, and when his son was born, it had always been Clark who he opened up to.\n
\n
So when he was able to return to them alive, that moment when he saw Clark face to face, an unexplainable feeling of relief suddenly washed over him. From the moment he steeled himself upon his inevitable death, and to when he survived it, everything had felt like a dream, an illusion to him...so much so that he could not help but doubt it all.\n
\n
It was only at that time, when he returned to the palace and was surrounded by the knights, that reality finally sunk in.\n
\n
*switching to Roderick’s POV\n
\n
Her Highness, Pryde Royale Ivy. There’s no mistaking it that she's my benefactor. However, I didn’t have any plans on thanking her for it...because I believed that I shouldn’t do so. Because as a knight, I got her involved and dragged into a mess. It's something that I should never praise or be thankful for. I even had a thought that instead of involving a member of the Royal Family, it would have been better for me to die and be buried alive beneath the wreckage.\n
\n
Read only on eunietl.weebly.com\n
\n
That was why during today’s conference, I strongly rebuked her. Even if it dampens her mood or if I get accused of lèse majesté, that was the only thing I wouldn’t back down from. I would rather die than expose the Royal Family, the citizens, or my fellow knights to danger just for my own well-being.\n
\n
That was what I strongly felt. That was why at today’s conference, I went there with the mindset of a criminal, branded with the sin of prolonging his life.\n
\n
However, the words she told me today were the complete opposite of mine. She told me that I should be more aware that my existence, which is not even a member of the Royal Family, is of great importance to the citizens and how I play a crucial role in the lives of the people around me. \n
\n
And then there was Clark, who started off with words befitting of a knight. He thanked her for her precognition ability, the replenishments of the weapons, and then he prostrated himself as he thanked her for saving my life. \n
\n
It was at that time when I realized for the first time that it was only me who thought that I should have died there. \n
\n
And then there was my son, Arthur. Going that far for me was something I found unbelievable. To see him express his gratitude for my sake was something unimaginable to me since all this time, we had only been fighting with each other.\n
\n
Then Arthur said that he wanted to be a knight. \n
\n
All this time, that was all I ever wished and dreamed of endlessly.\n
\n
I always knew that it was because of me that Arthur was forced to carry a heavy burden. Arthur, whose special ability was not suitable for fighting, unlike mine, despaired over this fact. Furthermore, with the way people around us continued to compare him to me, the pressure became too much to the point that he even gave up on becoming a knight.\n
\n
As if the young him who always said he wanted to become a knight had turned out to be a lie. The more my name spread and reached higher heights, the more Arthur became keenly aware of the gap between us and the more it tormented him.\n
\n
It would have been alright if, from the very beginning, he didn’t want to become a knight. However, it was because of me that Arthur grew to admire becoming a knight, and it was also because of me that he had to give up in pursuing his dream. Knowing that has been extremely painful for me.\n
\n
Specifically, it was because I live while honouring the knight's way of life that Arthur gave up on his dream of becoming a knight and began to recoil at the very thought of it.\n
\n
Read only on eunietl.weebly.com\n
\n
I already lost count of how many times I grumbled and lamented to Clark about it and that I was sure Arthur hated me. Because even though he had the physical strength, quick reflexes, and ability to make strategic decisions, even though he had all the talent he needed to become a knight, it was because of me that his dream was shut down.\n
\n
To the point that a knight’s way of life became an embarrassment to him. Because maybe at that point for Arthur, a knight —my way of life— was nothing but shame for him. I have probably lamented that over and over again to Clark.\n
\n
At that time, Clark and I didn’t know why Arthur decided to open up to Pryde-sama. But something I managed to understand about that, it was because of Pryde-sama specifically that he was able to open up. \n
\n
And then, despite his continuous self-depreciation, he asked if he can still become a knight. I nearly doubted myself when I heard him say that. To think that he had yet to abandon his dream of becoming a knight. \n
\n
The moment I heard his words, I could feel the corner of my eyes sting, and before I realized it, tears were already falling down. I didn’t even notice I was crying until Clark patted my shoulder. \n
\n
Without hesitation, Pryde-sama gave Arthur the push he needed. Despite the continuous rude remarks that I directed at her a while ago, she gave my son a supportive push in the right direction.\n
\n
I wonder how long it has been since I last saw Arthur cry that much. \n
\n
Arthur said that I am a splendid knight and that no matter how long it takes, he will definitely become one. He wants to become strong enough to protect me, my wife, the citizens, and the Royal Family as a knight.\n
\n
I don’t think I have ever been this happy about the future, and to know that Arthur has found what he wants to protect and cherish for the rest of his life.\n
\n
Her Highness, the First Princess, Pryde\n
\n
I’m so grateful to her that I don’t think it would ever be enough even if I thanked her for a lifetime. If it wasn’t for her, I would have probably never heard such words from him.\n
\n
No, before that...if she had not saved me, I would never have been able to hear Arthur’s real thoughts and feelings.\n
\n
From the bottom of my heart, I’m glad I’m alive.\n
\n
To be able to have the chance to meet my good friend, my fine subordinates, and the son that I’m proud of.\n
\n
Without a doubt, she is the most suitable person to rule over this country.\n
\n
And I will protect her, and this country she will rule over, for the rest of my life.\n
\n
As a knight, to repay this debt of gratitude.\n
\n
Now that I think about it, she is such a mysterious young lady.\n
\n
Read only on eunietl.weebly.com\n
\n
The way she bravely stood up against the ambushers, her magnificent and commanding speech, and her benevolent heart. One moment, you see her as an ordinary 11-year-old girl, who got all flustered just because you could see a glimpse beneath her dress...that…\n
\n
“....Pffft!!””\n
\n
“So, Roderick. You’ve finally started reminiscing things and bursting out into laughter suddenly. We should leave the money and go home soon.”\n
\n
Clark looked at me as if there was no helping it, and then he lent me his shoulder. My vision had become blurry, so I was aware that I had drunk quite a lot already. \n
\n
“No...I can still drink.”\n
\n
After saying that, Clark let out a huge sigh, and just like that, with unsteady feet, both of us left the pub.\n
\n
“Tomorrow. You can drink again tomorrow. Don’t you have to train Arthur early in the morning? If you’re late, Arthur will hate you.”\n
\n
He was right. On our way home after the conference, Arthur told me to train him and that any time was fine as long as I had the time to spare. I was so happy when I heard him say that. I had trouble stopping myself from smiling broadly.\n
\n
“...Arthur will surely be a knight stronger than me…”\n
\n
“There it is, a foolish parent.**” \n
\n
(**Eunie: Oya-Baka/Shin Baka=doting parent(s). They love their kids so much that the dotingness degree is seen by others as idiotic. Like Uchi no Musume..)\n
\n
“Shut up, stupid.”\n
\n
And so the two knights, with their shoulders supporting each other, started walking their way back home. Both of them respectively swore amongst themselves to never forget about what happened today.\n
\n
….The next day, it was a good thing that he was barely on time for the training with Arthur. Unfortunately, he forgot his sword at home. Furthermore, Roderick, who was resting in the inner room of the knights’ training ground, heard about the sudden arrival of Pryde. While still in a dazed and flustered state, he immediately stood up and hit his forehead strongly against the shelves, knocking over and destroying them in the process, which is a story for another time\n
