I took a breath as we walked down the corridor.

“It’s hard being popular, isn’t it?”

Natsumi-chan said with a bitter smile.

“You know, It won’t always be like that.”

I know that. Transfer students that come to the countryside aren’t common, so there is always commotion around.

“Yeah, But why me(♂). . .no me(♀) uh. . .”

I messed up my pronoun. I’m still not used to it.

“It’s because Yukiya-chan is so fascinating.”
“I don’t know about that. . .”

Well, I guess it’s better to be liked than hated. . .

“Well, this is the arts and crafts’ room. . .Over there is the lunch room.”

I was guided to the arts room, the multipurpose room, etc.
Of course I already know where everything is, but I’m acting like I don’t know.

“It’s almost impossible to escape the wood.”

From the pillars, to the framework of the building, all was made of wood. Mortar and obvious masking was done to the wall. The re-coated paint was apparent.
It has certainly seen better days.

“Here is the only modern building.”

I was then brought to a shiny large building. We left the old building and then walked into the new one.
The gymnasium.

“It was just built a few years ago.”

In the winter, most activities are closed due to snow. This snow coverage can last for a long time. Therefore this facility was designed to allow activities such as P.E and club activities to happen inside. In addition to it being used as the main gathering place for school events.
In fact, thanks to that, Baseball and Natsumi-chan’s soft ball club can also be played in the winter.

“It’s amazing, isn’t it? It was 10 years in the making.”

There is a reason why Natsumi-chan knows all the details.
This gymnasium was actually created with the planning of Natsumi-chan’s father. Who is also the village mayor.
Upon completion, there was a grand opening ceremony. Elementary, junior high students, important people, and normal people from the village were there. I was also present at the time, and clearly remember Natsumi-chan’s father cutting a tape rope.
It was designed to withstand any earthquakes, strong wind, and heavy blizzard. With a stock pile of blankets, food, and first aids for disasters.
It was designed to act as an emergency evacuation site for the village.
At the entrance there is a sign board that says.
“Hyosei’s Emergency Shelter”.
Natsumi-chan wasn’t involved, but she often heard about her father’s long awaited pride.

“Past the gym is the pool. . .But obviously we aren’t using it right now.”

Behind the gymnasium is a pool that is exclusively used during the summer season.
The snow is piling up on there now, and there are no signs of it being maintained.
However once the pool is opened, the classes will change into their swimwear and all students deep clean it with mops and hoses.
Oh. . .I just thought about wearing swimwear. I don’t want to think about that now. . .

“How is it? It isn’t like the urban schools you are used to. They are more beautiful and modern, right?”
“Eh? Ah, Yeah. . .I think the atmosphere is nice. I. . .I(♀) like it.”

I had to carefully make sure I chose my pronoun correctly.

“I sort of long to see those schools, but I don’t want to leave this village. . .”
“U,Uh. Is that so?”
“The air is clean here. Oh, that’s the reason Yukiya-chan came here, right?”

Oh yeah, I’m supposed to have some kind of asthma.

“T-That’s right.”
“Ah, then I think it’s best if I show you it.”
“?”

I then followed her to the nurse’s office.
We knocked on the door, but there was no response.
There was a sign that stated they were currently patrolling the school.
I guess we’ll have to simply come back later.

“No, let’s go in.”

She reached out and opened the door. Apparently it was unlocked.
Natsumi-chan is much bolder than I, so I simply followed behind her.

“S-Sorry for the incursion. . .”
“This is the health room. If you ever feel sick, come here, and the nurse will take care of you.”

She then explained.

“Remember, girls especially need to sometimes take care of things here.”
“Uh Huh.”

I don’t really know what she means.
Natsumi-chan then looked around.

“?”

Once she confirmed nobody was around, she looked clearly at me.

“Yukiya-chan. . .Is it okay?”
“Eh. . ?”

Even though she confirmed nobody was here, she kept her voice low.

“The period.”

Period? What does she mean, like class period?
. . .Then it immediately dawned on me.
Oh, not period as in time. . .As in menstruation?

My body froze once I realized that.

“Because when I feel it bad, I often come here.”
“O. ..Oh.”

I never knew. . .

“So if it suddenly comes up and you forget and have no napkins or anything, the teacher will have some here. It’s a female teacher named Hayashi-sensei.”

Maybe I should keep that in mind.

“Yeah, and if you need to talk to me about this and we are in front of boys, we would use strawberries or ketchup as a secret word. Or “that day” or even “girls’ day”. I guess.”
“S-Strawberry- – -.”

I muttered. Girls would sometimes say that they had eaten strawberries in the morning, or accidentally spilled ketchup, and so on. . .
My lips were trembling as my entire reality shifted. I couldn’t answer her at all.- – –

“By any chance. Has it not happened?. . .Yet?”

Natsumi-chan was looking surprised at my expression.
I haven’t recovered yet from the shocking reality of girl talk.

“Okay, I’m sure it will come. I understand. I know what it’s like. I used to be the one who had all the kids around me start to have it, and I was the only one who hasn’t.”
“I think it would be better if it didn’t come. . .”
“Ha, haha. . .”

What do I do. . ? If Natsumi-chan figures me out, it will be super embarrassing now that I know this serious secret.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another chapter out, and I’m starting to wonder if Natsumi actually knows the secret. I was pretty confident she knew, but maybe this is just her way of being helpful. Regardless, still waiting for the big reveal.
Next chapter in 2-3 days. Sorry this was the 3 day one. But I got distracted.
